Cartridge Type Activated Carbon Filter

Cartridge Type Activated Carbon Filter is a molecular filtration solution with granular activated carbon, designed to reduce odors, volatile organic compounds and certain gas-phase contaminants in industrial and commercial ventilation systems.

Cylindrical cartridges filled with granular activated carbon are installed in a galvanized or painted steel support frame. The modular cartridge design allows the carbon type, number of cartridges and filter depth to be selected according to the application.

What Is a Cartridge Type Activated Carbon Filter?

A cartridge type activated carbon filter is a modular gas-phase filtration system designed to adsorb gas molecules from the airflow onto the surface of granular activated carbon. Each cartridge has a cylindrical body that securely contains the activated carbon granules.

Filling the cartridges using a vibration-assisted method helps reduce the risk of air channels or voids forming between the granules. As a result, airflow can pass more evenly through the carbon bed, allowing more effective use of the available activated carbon volume.

The filter frame can be manufactured from galvanized or painted steel according to application requirements. An EPDM gasket on each cartridge helps reduce uncontrolled bypass airflow between the cartridge and the mounting surface.

Carbon and chemical impregnation codes should be selected according to the target contaminant. The same media may not be suitable for every gas, VOC or odor compound. Media compatibility and chemical composition should be verified before ordering.

Model and Performance Table

The filter type prefix in the source has been adapted to AR in accordance with the Airtes product coding system. The AC segment is retained because it identifies virgin activated carbon media.

Activated Carbon Media Options

Cartridges can be filled with virgin activated carbon or different chemically impregnated media types according to the target contaminant.

Virgin activated carbon: Considered for various organic vapors, solvent odors and certain VOC compounds.
Potassium permanganate media: Can be used for chemical oxidation of certain reactive gases and odor compounds.
KOH-impregnated carbon: Can be evaluated for the removal of certain acidic gases.
Potassium iodide carbon: Can be used in special gas-phase applications according to the target chemical.
Phosphoric acid impregnated media: Evaluated on a project-specific basis for certain alkaline compounds.
Special or blended media: Special formulations can be used where multiple contaminants are present.

Maintenance and Cartridge Replacement

The service life of activated carbon cartridges should not be determined solely by pressure drop. The carbon bed may lose adsorption capacity for the target contaminant before becoming physically clogged.

Cartridge replacement should be determined using inlet and outlet gas measurements, odor breakthrough, activated carbon sample analysis, estimated saturation calculations or planned service intervals.

When used cartridges are removed, the nature of the adsorbed chemicals should be considered. Appropriate personal protective equipment should be used, and the cartridges should be disposed of according to the facility’s waste management procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which contaminants can a cartridge type activated carbon filter be used for?
Depending on the carbon type, it can be used for various odors, organic vapors, VOC compounds and certain acidic or alkaline gases.
Can virgin activated carbon be used for every gas?
No. Certain gases may require media impregnated with potassium permanganate, KOH, potassium iodide or other chemicals for effective removal.
Does high relative humidity affect performance?
Yes. Water vapor can occupy activated carbon pores and reduce adsorption capacity and filter life for certain gases. A relative humidity below 70% is recommended.
Can cartridges be replaced individually?
In modular systems, cartridges can be removed from the frame and replaced individually. However, replacing all cartridges within the same filter may be preferred for uniform performance.
Can filter life be monitored with a pressure sensor?
Pressure drop can indicate particulate loading but does not directly indicate carbon saturation. Gas measurements or carbon analysis should also be performed.

Removal efficiency, service life or outlet concentration for a specific contaminant cannot be guaranteed without project-specific technical calculation and verification.
