Humidity Control in Paint Booths

Humidity control in paint booths is important for quality, productivity and energy savings in industrial facilities.

Paint booths are sensitive production areas where surface-coating processes are carried out, particularly in the automotive, metal, plastics and furniture industries. Humidity control in these areas is critical for paint adhesion, drying time and final-coat quality.

1. Why Is Humidity Control Necessary?

Consequences of unsuitable humidity levels:

Surface defects such as orange peel, blistering and cracking

Longer drying times and slower production lines

Static-electricity buildup at low humidity, causing dust adhesion and surface defects

Condensation of solvent vapours and explosion risk at high humidity

2. Ideal Humidity Levels

Water-Based Paint

50%–65%
Stable humidity is required for evaporation

Solvent-Based Paint

45%–60%
Fire-risk and VOC control

Powder Coating

40%–55%
For surface charging and adhesion

Note: Indoor conditions are generally recommended to be maintained at 20–25°C and 50%–60% relative humidity.

3. Humidity Control Methods

a) Dehumidification

Condensation on a cooling surface: passing air over the cooling coil in the air-handling unit.

Desiccant adsorption: rotor systems using silica gel, lithium chloride and similar materials.

b) Humidification

Steam humidifier: hygienic, but with high energy consumption.
Ultrasonic humidifier: provides uniform humidification with low energy use.

High-pressure water-spray systems

4. System Example: Humidity-Controlled Air-Handling Unit

Flow Diagram:

Outdoor Air

Pre-Cooling (dehumidification by condensation)

Heat Recovery (from exhaust air)

Humidification (if required)

Filtration + HEPA

Supply Air → Paint Booth

Exhaust → Filter → Heat Recovery → Exhaust Discharge

Parameters to Monitor:

Airflow rate (m³/h)

Indoor air temperature and relative humidity

Outdoor conditions

Exhaust air humidity level

Solvent-vapour concentration (ATEX requirements)

5. Energy Efficiency and Control

Preconditioning outdoor air through heat-recovery systems

Humidity-sensor-supported PID control through automation

Zone-based control: the humidity level in the waiting area outside the booth may differ

Energy optimisation with EC fans and inverter-driven compressors

6. Applications

Automotive paint shops

Metal-part coating facilities

Furniture and wood-painting systems

Food-packaging lines

Electrical-equipment paint lines
