Industrial Vacuum Tanks

Industrial Vacuum Tanks

INDUSTRIAL VESSELS AND PROCESS TANKS

Industrial Vacuum Tanks

Engineered Tanks for Processes Below Atmospheric Pressure

Industrial vacuum tanks are process vessels engineered for collection, degassing, transfer and other operations below atmospheric pressure. Their design considers external-pressure stability, leak tightness and operating conditions together.

Airtes Industrial can manufacture carbon steel or stainless steel vacuum tanks for chemical, petrochemical, energy, food, pharmaceutical and general manufacturing applications. Capacity, material, geometry, connections and safeguards are determined for each project.

⇄

External-Pressure Stability

Shell stability, stiffener spacing and fabrication tolerances are evaluated for the specified vacuum condition.

🛡

Engineered Vessel Construction

Material, wall thickness, supports, nozzles and inspection requirements are selected for the defined service.

⚙

Project-Specific Fabrication

Capacity, vacuum level, temperature, process medium and site requirements guide the final design.

What Is a Vacuum Tank?

A vacuum tank is a process vessel used below atmospheric pressure. Depending on its configuration, it can support product collection, degassing, drying, suction, filtration, vacuum transfer or process preparation.

External pressure can cause a thin shell to buckle or collapse. Therefore, shell geometry, wall thickness, unsupported length, stiffening rings, heads, cones, manways, nozzles, supports and manufacturing tolerances must be evaluated as one system.

Key Technical Features

Design Condition:
Maximum external differential pressure, design temperature and possible positive-pressure cases are defined.
Material:
Carbon steel, stainless steel or service-compatible special materials can be specified.
Vessel Geometry:
Vertical or horizontal cylindrical construction with formed, conical or project-specific heads.
Capacity:
Volume and dimensions can be adapted to process demand, installation space and transport limits.
Connections:
Vacuum, filling, discharge, level, instrumentation, manway and process connections can be integrated.
Inspection Plan:
Weld inspection, dimensional checks, leak testing and functional tests are defined in the approved plan.

Vacuum Tank Design Priorities

◊

Buckling Resistance
Shell thickness, stiffeners, unsupported length and imperfections are evaluated against external pressure.

🛡

Leak Tightness
Flanges, gaskets, welds, manways and nozzles are matched to the required service and leak rate.

⚙

Process Integration
Vacuum pumps, filters, traps, level instruments, discharge systems and safeguards can be incorporated.

✓

Inspection and Testing
Inspection and acceptance criteria are documented according to the design code and operating duty.

Vacuum Tank Design and Manufacturing Process

1. Process Analysis
Vacuum level, medium, temperature, capacity, operating cycle, cleaning needs and site conditions are reviewed.
2. Engineering Calculations
External-pressure stability, wall thickness, stiffeners, nozzles, supports and applicable loads are calculated.
3. Material Selection
Material is chosen according to corrosion, compatibility, temperature, hygiene and cleanability requirements.
4. Vessel Fabrication
Shells, heads, stiffeners, nozzles and supports are manufactured to approved drawings and procedures.
5. Equipment Integration
Vacuum, discharge, level, measurement, relief and process equipment can be incorporated as required.
6. Testing and Delivery
Approved inspections and tests are completed before shipment. Site installation and commissioning remain essential.

Inspection and Testing of Vacuum Tanks

Leak Testing

The method and acceptance leak rate are selected for the service. Options can include pressure decay, vacuum hold or tracer-gas techniques.

Controlled Vacuum Test

A controlled functional test can verify vacuum performance and tightness. Its procedure and limits must follow the approved test plan.

Weld and Dimensional Inspection

Weld quality, out-of-roundness, tolerances, nozzle locations and surfaces are checked according to the specified inspection level.

An internal hydrostatic pressure test alone does not demonstrate resistance to external-pressure buckling. Design calculations and the complete inspection plan remain necessary.

Industrial Vacuum Tank Applications

Chemical processing plants
Petrochemical processes
Energy facilities
Food production lines
Pharmaceutical and hygienic processes
Vacuum transfer and collection systems

Vacuum Tank Selection Criteria

Vacuum Level

Maximum external differential pressure, including credible full-vacuum conditions, is a primary design input.

Medium and Process

Chemical compatibility, temperature, viscosity, corrosion, hygiene and cleaning requirements influence the material and finish.

Connections and Equipment

Vacuum pumps, filters, traps, level instruments, drains, vents, manways and piping loads must be considered.

Design Codes, Safeguards and Operating Scope

Where applicable, external-pressure design can be assessed under requirements such as ASME Section VIII Division 1. The selected code, jurisdiction, design conditions and conformity route must be confirmed for each project.

The EU Pressure Equipment Directive applies to stationary pressure equipment with a maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar. A vacuum-only vessel is therefore not automatically within PED scope. However, positive-pressure operation, jackets or separate pressure chambers may change the assessment.

Depending on the process, vacuum breakers, overpressure protection, isolation, condensate traps, level controls and pump protection may be required. Toxic or flammable media can also require hazardous-area assessment, vent treatment and additional containment.

Benefits of Project-Specific Vacuum Tanks

Can support stable process operation below atmospheric pressure.
Material and surface finish can be matched to the process medium.
Capacity, geometry and connections can be adapted to the project.
Engineering calculations address external-pressure stability and applied loads.
Documented inspections can support quality control and traceability.
The design can be adapted to chemical, food, pharmaceutical and energy processes.

Request Information About Industrial Vacuum Tanks

A vacuum tank project should define the vacuum level, possible positive pressure, medium, capacity, temperature, material, leak-rate requirement, connections, safeguards and applicable design code.
