Odour Removal Filters
Industrial Odour Control Systems with Chemical Wet Scrubber and Activated Carbon Stages
Odour Removal Filters are multi-stage air-treatment systems used to reduce hydrogen sulphide, mercaptans and other odour-causing gases generated by industrial processes, wastewater treatment plants, food production and organic-material processing areas.
In the two-stage design, a wet scrubber operating with a chemical washing solution reduces the high-concentration gas load in the first stage. The activated-carbon filter used in the second stage captures residual low-concentration odour components as a final polishing step.

100–30,000 CFM
Can be sized from small local extraction points to central industrial odour-collection systems.
Two-Stage Treatment
Chemical wet-scrubber and activated-carbon final-filter stages can be combined.
Up to 99.99% Efficiency
High removal performance can be targeted according to gas composition, concentration and media selection.
What Are Odour Removal Filters?
An odour removal filter is industrial air-treatment equipment that reduces unpleasant chemical components in a gas stream through absorption, chemisorption and adsorption methods.
Pollutants such as H₂S, mercaptans and organic sulphur compounds can create noticeable odours even at low concentrations. Therefore, in high-performance applications, using an activated-carbon polishing stage to capture trace components remaining at the wet-scrubber outlet is important rather than only reducing the main pollutant load.
How Do Odour Removal Filters Work?
Odorous Air Inlet
Air containing H₂S, mercaptans or organic odour components is drawn into the system by a fan.
Chemical Wet Scrubber
The high gas load is reduced by absorption in a suitable alkaline or oxidising washing solution.
Mist Elimination
A mist eliminator reduces liquid-droplet carryover into the second filtration stage.
Activated-Carbon Final Filter
Residual low-concentration odour molecules are captured on the activated-carbon surface for final treatment.
Two-Stage Odour Removal System
| Stage | Treatment Method | Function |
|---|---|---|
| First stage | Chemical wet scrubber | Reduces H₂S and high-concentration water-soluble odour components through absorption or chemisorption. |
| Intermediate stage | Mist eliminator | Limits the carryover of washing liquid to the activated-carbon bed. |
| Second stage | Activated-carbon adsorption | Final treatment section that captures trace odour components at low concentrations. |

Odour Compounds That Can Be Removed
| Pollutant | Chemical Formula | Recommended Treatment Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrogen sulphide | H₂S | Alkaline and oxidising wet scrubber followed by impregnated activated carbon. |
| Methyl mercaptan | CH₃SH | Oxidising chemical scrubbing and activated-carbon final filter. |
| Dimethyl sulphide | (CH₃)₂S | Special impregnated activated carbon and pre-scrubbing according to process conditions. |

Activated-Carbon Polishing Stage
Odour components remaining at the wet-scrubber outlet are generally at low concentrations. These gases may need to be captured not only with standard activated carbon, but with impregnated activated-carbon media selected for the relevant pollutant chemistry.

Application Note
When selecting odour removal filters, airflow rate; H₂S, NH₃, mercaptan and VOC concentrations; humidity; temperature; process operating time; target odour level; chemical consumption; packing height; activated-carbon type; carbon-bed contact time; pressure loss; fan capacity and media replacement interval should be evaluated together.
