Sanitary Pumps
Sanitary pumps are process pumps used for the controlled transfer of fluids in food, beverage, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and chemical applications where product safety, cleanability and process hygiene are important.
Smooth internal surfaces, hygienic connections, product-compatible elastomer options and mechanical seals help reduce product residue and simplify cleaning. Pump selection should be based on flow rate, head, temperature, viscosity and the chemical properties of the fluid.

340 m³/h Flow Rate
Depending on process conditions, solutions can be applied for flow rates of up to 340 m³/h.
100 m Head
A maximum head of 100 metres can be achieved with the appropriate pump model and operating point.
-30°C to +110°C
They can be used across a wide fluid-temperature range, depending on the selected seal and elastomer.
What Is a Sanitary Pump?
A sanitary pump is a specialised pumping system designed to transfer liquids in processes where food safety and product purity must be protected. Its construction reduces product build-up on fluid-contact surfaces and uses connections that are easy to clean.
It can be used with different fluids, from low-viscosity, water-like liquids to dairy products, beverages, liquid medicines, cleaning chemicals and certain process solutions. The right pump type should be determined according to the fluid’s rheological and chemical properties.
How Do Sanitary Pumps Work?
Fluid Inlet
The process fluid reaches the pump suction inlet through a hygienic connection.
Energy Transfer
Motor energy is transmitted to the pump impeller or the positive-displacement transfer element.
Pressurisation
The fluid gains motion and pressure, allowing it to progress through the process line.
Hygienic Transfer
The product is transferred to the process through the cleanable pump casing and hygienic discharge connection.
Technical Specifications of Sanitary Pumps
| Technical Parameter | Maximum Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum flow rate | 340 m³/h | Varies according to the pump model, speed and operating point. |
| Maximum head | 100 m | Depends on fluid density and the pump performance curve. |
| Fluid temperature | -30°C to +110°C | Depends on the selected elastomer, seal and casing material. |
| Pump design | Sanitary centrifugal or process-specific special type | Selected according to low- or high-viscosity fluid requirements. |
| Connection options | Hygienic clamp, union or flanged | Can be selected to suit the existing process piping. |
| Casing material | Process-compatible stainless steel | Determined by the chemical composition of the fluid and hygiene requirements. |
| Control option | Fixed-speed or variable-frequency controlled | Enables automatic control of flow rate and process pressure. |
Types of Sanitary Pumps
They can be used to transfer low- and medium-viscosity fluids at high flow rates.
They can be considered for lines containing air, tank-emptying operations and cleaning-liquid return applications.
They can be used to transfer viscous or sensitive products, including products containing soft solids.
They can be applied to provide steady, low-pulsation flow for high-viscosity products.
Hygienic Design Features
They help reduce product build-up and areas that are difficult to clean.
They make it easier to disconnect the pump from process piping and clean it.
Seal selection can be made according to temperature, chemical resistance and product compatibility.
A single or double seal can be applied according to the product, pressure and operating temperature.
It supports the reduction of product residue inside the casing when the pump is stopped.
It can be used with clean-in-place systems according to process requirements.
Applications of Sanitary Pumps
Sauces, dairy products, liquid food, syrup and process-water transfer.
Water, soft drinks, fruit juice, concentrates and beverage production lines.
Purified water, liquid medicines, process solutions and cleaning-liquid applications.
Transfer of chemical solutions, additives and suitable process fluids.
Sanitary Pump Selection Criteria
Advantages of Sanitary Pumps
Application and Pump Selection Note
The specified values of 340 m³/h flow rate, 100 metres of head and temperatures from -30°C to +110°C may not all be achieved at the same operating point. Final performance must be verified according to the selected pump model’s performance curve and process conditions.
When selecting a sanitary pump, fluid viscosity, density, temperature, sensitivity, particle content, cleaning chemicals, connection standard, seal arrangement and surface finish should be assessed together.
