Single Cartridge Activated Carbon Filter

Single Cartridge Activated Carbon Filter is a cylindrical granular activated carbon filter element used to reduce odors, volatile organic compounds and certain gas-phase contaminants in industrial and commercial ventilation systems.

Cartridges with an outside diameter of Ø145 mm are available in 400, 450 and 600 mm length options. Standard- and high-capacity cartridge designs can be filled with different activated carbon or chemically impregnated media types according to the target contaminant.

What Is a Single Cartridge Activated Carbon Filter?

A single cartridge activated carbon filter is a replaceable gas-phase filter element designed to adsorb gas molecules from the airflow onto the surface of granular activated carbon. The cartridge body retains the activated carbon granules within a controlled bed and allows air to pass through the media.

The cartridges are filled using a vibration-assisted filling method to reduce voids that could cause uncontrolled airflow between the granules. Therefore, the method helps create a more uniform carbon bed and improves utilization of the cartridge volume.

The single-cartridge design can be used as a replacement filter element in existing multi-cartridge housings, specially manufactured gas filtration cells or project-specific modular filtration systems.

The first AR segment in the product code identifies the filter type, while the following AC segment identifies virgin activated carbon media inside the cartridge.

Model and Performance Table

The product-type prefix in the source has been adapted to AR in accordance with the Airtes product coding system. The AC segment is retained because it identifies the activated carbon media.

Standard- and high-capacity cartridges may contain different carbon filling volumes despite having the same outside diameter and length. The mounting socket, cartridge connection and gasket surface should be checked before ordering.

Activated Carbon Media Options

Potassium permanganate media: Can be used for chemical oxidation of certain reactive gases and odor compounds.
KOH-impregnated carbon: Can be considered for adsorption of certain acidic gases.
Potassium iodide carbon: Can be used in specialized gas-phase applications according to the target chemical.
Phosphoric acid media: Can be evaluated for certain alkaline gas compounds on a project-specific basis.

Maintenance and Cartridge Replacement

The service life of an activated carbon cartridge should not be determined solely by pressure drop. The carbon bed may lose adsorption capacity for the target gas or odor compound before becoming physically clogged.

Replacement time should be determined based on inlet and outlet gas measurements, odor breakthrough, carbon sample analysis, estimated saturation calculations or a planned service interval.

When removing and disposing of used cartridges, the nature of the adsorbed chemicals should be considered. Appropriate personal protective equipment should be used, and the facility’s waste management procedures should be followed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is a single cartridge activated carbon filter used?
It can be used in multi-cartridge filter housings, dedicated gas filtration cells and as a replacement cartridge in existing systems.
What is the difference between standard- and high-capacity cartridges?
A high-capacity cartridge contains a larger carbon filling volume than a standard-capacity cartridge of the same length.
Can virgin activated carbon be used for every gas?
No. Certain gases may require media impregnated with potassium permanganate, KOH, potassium iodide or other chemicals.
Does high humidity affect filter performance?
Yes. Water vapor can occupy carbon pores and reduce adsorption capacity for certain gases. The recommended relative humidity is below 70%.
Can cartridge life be determined with a pressure sensor?
Pressure measurement can indicate particulate loading but does not directly indicate activated carbon saturation. Gas measurement or carbon analysis should also be considered.
